|Overview|------------------------------------------------[GS-O]

Welcome to another weapon usage session with KillTheDJ. In this
new text, we are going to cover the fundamentals of using the
weapon set which is the Great Sword, or GS for short.

The GS is one of the few large weapons a hunter can equip to
the hunt. It's graphical size, however, is only second to the
fact that the weapon offers a wide range of combat options
for experienced and newbie hunters alike. It is in legue with
the damage output of the Hammer family. In fact, it even has its
own charging ability. Regular attacks are as potent given that
it can be excuted at different angles,as well as, having
the potential to loop.

On the receiving end of punishment, the GS acts as a shield as
well. Though it may not be as effective as the other shielded
weapons, as will be discussed later, it still is a very handy
option for all hunters.

Simply put the GS is an all-in-one weapon, and hopefully this
guide would be very informative and inviting for people
to use this weapon.

Here are the basic controls and motions available to hunters
armed with the Great Sword:

Note on Chargin Attack: If players notice that the angle of
impact is off during charging, using the anolog stick upon
charge release can adjust the angle/direction.

|Looping, Charging & Blocking|----------------------------[GS-B]

As mentioned at the beginning, the GS is the "all-in-one"
weapon. First possesses the potential loop all its slashes,
giving the hunter a seemingly 360 degree attack pattern.
Second, it has the ability to charge to delivery sure-hit
attacks. And lastly, it can block attacks that may be thrown
by any monster. Let's take a closer look at each:

[Looping]

As the earlier section described, the GS possesses different
angles of attack. It can be branded as the weapon with the
deadliest reach. You can kill monsters in front, behind, and at
the sides. Its immense size even allows you to hit flying
monster easily compared to other melee weapons.

The rule of looping is very simple. Your next attack should be
different from the previous. That's all you need to remember,
whether your coming from a quick draw or a charged attack. Note
however that the abovementioned attacks are classified the same
kind of attack as the [Tap /\] attack. This means that if you're
starting with these attacks, the next attack would either be
[Tap O] or [Tap /\ + O].* Knowing this, you can keep slashing
until an enemy has its wits about or you get hit.

*Similarly, Charging attacks can happen in between loops when
the timing is correct after a [O] or [/\+O] attack.

[Charging]

Another devastating factor of the GS is the ability to charge
for large amounts of sure-connecting damage. What is unique
about this type of charging does not require stamina, as we
know it from the hammer or bow. If you are the type of hunter
who is patient and have a knack of timing attacks, you are one
step closer at mastering the Great Sword.

The GS charging type could be regarded as Triple-charging, since
the animation of charging has three flashes of light. The more
flashes, the bigger damage bonus of course. Players need not
worry of not completing the whole triple-charge because the
charge process allows hunters to deliver a penetrating slash
regardless of the current sharpness of the weapon. If you would
normally bounce off with a [tap /\], waiting for a single flash
allows you to penetrate with a little more damage. Waiting a
little goes a long way.

If you want to connect longer charges, be sure to be familiar
with the monster you are fighting.

[Blocking]

The GS is not all about delivering damage, hunters can rest safe
knowing that the Great Sword could act as a shield. The GS,
being a large weapon takes a toll on the hunter's movement
speed. There would be occasions that players would find
themselves in threatening situations, and if the X botton is
a late option at the moment, GS hunters have the R botton
as their panic botton.

Much like other weapons with block, the GS requires stamina to
block. And depending on the skills you have activated, blocking
can be taxing. Without any Guard Skills to help you out, it can
send your hunter back a few paces. This backsliding animation
can be considered an advantage since it provides space between
you and a monster but almost always it only leaves you open to
monster attacks.

Another thing that you should watch out for when blocking with
the GS is that it wears out the weapon sharpness by some amount
for each block. A good thing to keep in mind here is to, again,
know your enemy's movements. Block or dodge according to this
familiarity.

Finally, GS blocks are also solely for taking an occasional
blow. It is not as offensive as blocks executed by SnS, Lance,
or Gunlance. You don't have slashing, movement, or poking at
your disposal. So really, treat is an emergency move.

After completing two other guides, and you having read
them, I'm sure we all realize that all weapons have a ton of
perks and a few setbacks under their belt. This is for the GS.

As I have told you guys early on, the GS is recommended for
hunters within any stage of their hunting life cycle. Newbies
will find it simple and safe to use, provided that they are
not too cocky with using the loops and charging. They should
also consider knowing when to disarm for better mobility, dodge
and block. Hunters who, more or less, have had time playing
the game may find it a fun experience using the charge and loops
given their monster knowledge. Using the charge attacks improves
ones timing as well as the ability to be patient in a fight.
When you've mastered using the charge, monster become truly
helpless under the oversized knife.

I personally haven't been handling the weapon for a long time
but it has sure been fun. Given that the newest version has
new skills that work really well with the weapon type, I don't
see why the weapon can't be one's best friend.

----------------------------------------------------------------

|General Strategy & Tips|---------------------------------[GS-D]

1) Always eat. This is always a must unless you wanna show off
how good a hunter you are. The extra life, stamina, or atk-up
can help you with your performance.

2) Keep your stamina at 150. Whether you are going to block,
dodge or run around crazy, having maximum stamina ups your
chances of avoiding a nasty monster attack. Always carry around
steaks, rations, or even juices.

3) A true fighter knows when to lower/ sheath his weapon. Given
that moving around with a GS out is very slow, only take out
your weapon when you are really going to use it. Never rely on
your blocking so much because it eats up stamina AND wears out
your weapon. If you can dodge something completely go for that,
and you can do that better unarmed.

4) Charging is not a requirement to complete a quest. Don't
force it on yourself to successfully land that triple charge.
It is however a gift with little cost, so use it. Have some
discretion - know your enemy and find the right time.

5) Just because charging allow you to penetrate attacks
regardless of sharpness doesn't mean you shouldn't keep your
weapons sharp. Remember that sharpness levels still factor in
damage computation. A charge with a max sharp weapon is better
than a charge with a dull weapon.

6) You are not immortal when you loop your attacks. Same with
charging, know when to use this neat trick. Choose your attacks
well too: you don't have to use all three angles for your loops.
Using two angles alternately would work, and would prevent you
from moving around so much because of the different attack
animations.

----------------------------------------------------------------

|What Weapon to Create|-----------------------------------[GS-E]

The Great Sword family, much like the other weapon types offer
weapons with a balance of RAW, ELEMENTAL and/or STATUS damage.
What seems to remain constant with most of the weapons would
be the fact that they have really huge RAW damage capability.
Most of the GS at high levels have RAW ATP's soaring at the
thousands. While there could be GS that have less than 1k ATP,
this would be surely compensated by either a large ELE/STAT
damage. In fact, the GS weapon is one if not the only weapon
type with ELEMENT ATP above 600 for a single element. [Example:
Dragonslayer tree and the Tuna Sword]

For those who would start and build their hunters around this
weapon, a weapon with each element/status damage is advisable.
I want, however, to pay close attention to the status ailments
of Sleep and Paralyze. These two status ailments work really
well the GS's charge attack. Imagine bringing along a Felyne
with either status, and you yourself weilding the same kind.
It is merciless.

On the other hand, players who just want to have a break from
their usual arsenal should just probably just invest one a
GS with a really huge RAW ATP and really high sharpness level.
You can never really go wrong with that combination.

----------------------------------------------------------------

|Armor|---------------------------------------------------[GS-F]

Given that the GS is carnage on its own, my advice for general
armor ideas would revolve around better defensive capacity. As
with any blocking weapon, one option for you would be getting
armor with Guard + followed, but not necessarily, by Guard Inc.
Disregarding the fact that your weapon gradually gets trashed
because of blocking these to skills helps you hold your ground.

The second option would be making use of the combination of
Evade +, Evade Inc. and Defensive Maneuvers. This allows you to
dodge more effectively for less stamina.

If you think you don't need these defensive skills, and you are
still greedy for offensive power. Armor sets that provide Fast
Charge is a skill for you. It will take you less time to charge,
lowering your risk of getting hit.

Actually I think with a few extra slots on your weapon,it is
actually possible to dress your character with the second
defensive option [Evade...] and this new skill.

Other supportive armor pieces include the Saint Sword Piercing
and Chaoshroom. The SSP is very effective against higher rank
monsters with really tough hides. Even if you can charge for
a penetrating blow, it's always better safe than sorry.
Chaoshroom can be used if you intend to use Sleep/Paralyze
to create charging or looping opportunities.

----------------------------------------------------------------

|Suggested Skills|----------------------------------------[GS-G]

Aside from the abovementioned, here are other skills you can
mix and match for a better GS hunting session. Short comments
are provided to explain the importance.

1) Artisan

A sharper sword will deal more damage, whicheve attack you
choose to use.

2) Sharp Sword

Reduces the rate at which your weapon become dull from attacking
AND blocking. (Correct me)

3) Sword Sharpening Inc.

Faster sharpening for constant weapon quality.

4) Unsheathed Atk Critical

Whether you are attacking with a quick-draw or a drawn charge
the attack will have a critical bonus. [like RA skill.] I
was also informed that even if your weapon has negative aff.,
a drawing attack motion ignores this and would even deals
critical damage. Beautiful Skill for those GS damage freaks.
